Ida Ruby (Read) Jarvis

Ida Jarvis passed away peacefully at the DVA Pavilion in Corner Brook, on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the age of 95 years. She was the daughter of the late James Read and Melinda (Best) Read of Tacks Beach, Nfld. She was predeceased by her brothers, Gordon, Saul and Ernest and niece, Beulah Coish. Ida was predeceased in 1955 by her husband John Jarvis of Sydney. Mourning her sad loss are sons, John Bruce, Whitehorse, N.W.T., and George Franklin, Calgary, Alta.; two grandchildren, Margaret Speer (Dave) and Grant (Cindy) of Ontario; great-grandson, Benjamin Speer, Ontario; nieces, Vera Earle, Hilda Read, Sylvia Beck (Robert); nephew, Ralph Read (Shirley), all of Corner Brook; special cousins, Beatrice Dewling, St. John’s, and Hilda (Gabriel) Lake, Sydney, as well as a number of great-nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ida proudly served in the RCAF during the Second World War and after returning home to Corner Brook, she worked at Bowaters until moving to Sydney where she lived most of her adult life. She returned to Corner Brook in 2005. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Stephen’s and Christ Church in Sydney, where she served many years in the ladies auxiliary and as bookkeeper for Christ Church. A reserved, gentle lady, Ida will be missed by all who knew her. She was a devoted mother and friend and staunchly independent. Along with being a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, she loved to read and walk and followed politics keenly. A memorial service will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 4.
